High rates Digital TV and Connected TVs in The Netherlands

The Netherlands: 88% watch digital; 37% have connected TV

In 2016 88% of Dutch households had digital TV reception, while the number of households with connected TV continued to rise, from 31% in 2015 to 37% in 2016.

These figures come from the Media Standard Survey 2016 (MSS), which is published by Dutch audience measurement agency SKO, and are based on research conducted by Kantar TNS among 6,060 households and 5,195 individuals aged 13 and older.

Most households in the Netherlands have the ability to watch digital television. The total penetration of digital TV reception in 2016 was similar to 2015. The percentage of households with digital television over the internet rose from 13% in 2015 to 18% in 2016.

The percentage of households with a connected television (with direct access to the internet) also rose, from 31% to 37%. This was a significant increase compared to 2015.

In 2016, 37% of Dutch households had a hard disk recorder. This rate was stable compared to the previous year. However, the number of households in possession of a video and a DVD recorder with or without a hard disk fell.

The percentage of Dutch homes with a media centre or dongle to the TV to the internet (such as Apple TV, Chromecast, etc.) was 12% in 2016, up from 10.5% in 2015.

The penetration of smartphones among Dutch people aged 13 years or older was 81%, up from 75% in 2015, and that of tablets 58%. The smartphone ownership increased further.

“For SKO the increase in the number of connected TVs is very relevant,” said Frans Kok, interim director SKO.

“The development gives the TV set an even more prominent position in the household and it is important to measure what happens to these sets. MSS is the main source for us to monitor the ownership of TV equipment and connected devices.”
